I'm hoping for Girardi and hoping against Mattingly and La Russa. Thank god Cincy took Torre's twin before we had a chance to.

I can't believe it really happened. I want Girardi. I'd settle for Mattingly or even Pena. I don't want LaRussa anywhere near this team.

I don't know enough about Valentine to make him my second choice. I really hope it's Girardi. He seems to understand the concept of using a reliever more than an inning-especially in a blow-out.

Not to reply to my own post, but I can't believe the hand-wringing I'm seeing about Torre. Of course a lot of it is the Evil Empire/Boss is bad stuff people like ESPN etc excel at, but this business about getting 1.5 mil more than any other manager to stay being an insult is really too much. St. Joe, let's see how you do without a $200 ,000,000 payroll.

If anyone has heard Joe's press conference, it wasn't the pay cut that caused him to reject Steinbrenner's offer. He said he would have considered a 2 year contract at the $5 million dollars a year. The part that caused him to reject the offer was that he felt it would distract the team if the talk of firing him occured again right after they lost some games. He also felt that the incentive money was an insult to him and the team. He would have accepted a 2 year contract with no incentive money. I have to agree with him. I think that Steinbrenner took the chicken way out. It would have been more manly to just fire Joe than to make him an offer he knew Joe would reject.
All of that being said, I do think that it was time for Joe to leave. But I thought Steinbrenner took the coward's way out. I've lost respect for him. I know alot of people will disagree with me but I respect all of the opinions that I have read here.
As to the question about who should replace Joe, I'm for Girardi or Mattingly.

Kathy-This wasn't George. He's not lucid all the time anymore.

I favor Girardi among the choices that have been mentioned publicly. But I hope the baseball people make the decision rather than the public relations department, so to speak.

As much as I think it's best that Joe is gone, I just think it was insulting the way it all came down. He deserved to be let go in a more diginified way. Despite the fact that Joe's skills have been lacking in the past few years, he did bring us to 4 WS wins. I like and respect him. I wish him the best and I'll have many fond memories of his Yankee years.

He was given a very fair offer. He deserved what he got.
