Time to talk baseball again.
I posted this at Bronx banter: Over at Pending Pinstripes, Alan Horne was the latest pitcher to be profiled. I respect their opinions as much as anyone's, and they seem to think he's close to being ready for the show (if he isn't already). I had to check his 2007 IP, and he had 153. He's 25 and more of a power pitcher than a finesse guy, so he's probably capable of 190 IP in 2008. I realize he's not on the 40-man, but there's still some dead wood that can be pared to make room for him. How big of a splash will it take for him to get to the bigs before summer? Even if he's only league average, he sounds like someone who can be (to a degree) an innings eater. A lot of people (some who should know better) are saying Cashman dropped the ball by not signing some set-up guys and maybe a "Livian Hernandez style innings eater". I think any manager worth his salt can take the arms already available and get enough good starting pitching and relief pitching to win a lot of games with this offense. I also think Girardi is very likely to be that guy. Since Cashman has always listened to his manager concerning what players he wants, it's entirely possible JG told him there's enough mound talent available already.

If Horne isn't ready at the beginning of the season, he will when if/when the Karstens and Rasners flame out.
We have so many good, young arms in the system it's ridiculous. We could have an all-home-grown pitching staff next year.

Can't wait for the season. I am so excited about the different approach we're likely to see.
I don't think we'll have the all home grown staff next year. We're going to sign Sabathia with some of the 60 million coming off the books.

We may not have room in the rotation for Sabathia. With guys like Betances and Brackman on the horizon, the rotation may be 6-deep sooner rather than later.

I think some of those guys will end up in the pen. And some of them will never make it. I'd sign Sabathia. It would be nice to have a power lefty in the rotation

I can't wait for Spring Training games to begin. I'll be in a brand new apartment and starting a brand new life. Magic is in the air and I think this will be our year.

Mysteries: Rasner vs Karstens vs ? Looking at the baseball cube, it seems obvious that Karstens is a better pitcher. My question is: do either of these guys have a legit chance of making a contribution as a spot starter/long reliever? Could either of them become one of those innings eaters for blow-outs, etc (capable of coming in and pitching 3-4 innings without giving up a lot of runs, getting to the 5th inning on the rare days they get to start, and that sort of thing)? I'm not familiar enough with either guy to make an educated guess.

Im really jacked up for this season! I dont know if its that the Knicks suck so bad or just the changes that were made or the kids playing such large roles but I am looking forward to this season more than in years past.

The kids and seeing what else Arod can do have me looking forward more than the past few years, but I think the biggest thing for me is seeing what this team can do with a competent manager.

I had a huge post which I screwed up when I did my reply, so I'll sum it up. We'll have the big three - Hughes, Joba, and Kennedy. I'm really confident all three will be quality starters for years. We'll have Wang for years and I'm confident he'll be at least a good pitcher for years. That leaves one starting spot for the oodles of our other prospects in the minors. The other starters and the reliever prospects will give us a huge pool to choose from. I don't think we need C. C., so rather then spend the money on him, I'd wish we'd either 1] not spend it and stay under the luxury tax, or 2] spend it on a relatively-young position player, like a Texeria.

With all the dough that will come off for us we can be even more aggressive in free agency after this year! We are back to doing it the right way and the big three is our reward
